Mt. Democrat – 14,148’

09-06-2008

Nearby town: Alma, CO

Of all the 54 or so 14,000’+ peaks in Colorado, there are bound to be a few that are less than stellar. Not that they are any less challenging, it’s just that (IMO) their setting is not quite as spectacular as say Mt. Bierstadt. Other than meeting the criteria of being taller than 14,000’, they are not much more than lumps of loose rock. Over in the middle of the state near Alma, there is an abundance of these peaks literally sitting side by side. My friend Rich Wood and I chose to do a group of four which includes Mt. Democrat, Mt. Bross, Mt. Cameron and Mt. Lincoln. The entire round trip is less than 8 miles across all four peaks including the hike from the parking area. However, upon summiting Democrat, my body decided it was done for the day. Altitude sickness set in just about the time we reached the top. I needed to eat, but would have puked if I tried. So rather than push my luck, I decided to head back to the truck. Rich graciously gave in to my request and we agreed we would hit the other three peaks next season. Rich is cool like that.
