Gray’s Peak – 14,270’

Torrey’s Peak – 14,267’

With my friends Rich Wood and Nathan Giffin, we headed out for the trailhead of the sister peaks. The two mountains are interesting in that Gray’s is a rounded, wide peak whereas Torrey’s is rather pointed and has a very pronounced drop-off on its north side. They are right next to each other, connected via a saddle that is at about 13,600’. We hit the trail early, maybe 7am. Since it was late in the summer and we were only about 45 minutes west of Denver, the trail was packed. Literally, there were probably 300 other hikers on the trail that day. The trailhead is around 10,600’ and the approach to Gray’s is almost 5 miles. Once you summit Gray’s, you continue west down the saddle and then up to Torrey’s. On the way back, you can take a shortcut out of the saddle back down the valley. We saw several white mountain goats on the neighboring peaks, as well as marmots and chipmunks.
